Fixing a broken home air conditioner can be very complicated due to its many complex parts. Over time, your air conditioning unit may be a victim of wear and tear, and eventually, it may break. There are many ways to troubleshoot an air conditioner, and below are some tips you need to know that may get you back up and cooling before you call.
Check the Filter
A very common cause of air conditioner break down is a dirty filter. All the dirt accumulated in the filter blocks the air that is supposed to go through your unit, which makes the appliance work harder than ever to cool your home it can also cause your unit to freeze over with ice. Once your filter is cleaned, there is a high possibility that it may function normally again.
Check Your Thermostat
Sometimes the unit is not the problem, sometimes It’s just the Thermostat. for what ever reason a lossofpower sometimes causes the settings to be wrong, One of the first things you need to check are the batteries (if your t-stat has them), to see if they are still healthy (in doubt change them out).Next, you can go to the temperature settings, and see if your unit is set to cool or heat. Finally, you can also check the timer settings of your control, for it may be off on a scheduled program. If you do not know how to check your program call us we will be glad to assist you, you can also ask for help from the technical support of the thermostats manufacturer.
Check the Coil outside.
If your air conditioner has stopped working and it seems to have happend durring the hottest part of the day, you may want to check the coil on the outdoor unit for dirt leaves or other obstructions that can lead to the unit running very hot and sometimes tripping the high pressure saftey limit or the internal pressure relief valve this condition can cause the compressor to fail. If the coils apear to be dirty wash them with your water hose (be sure to turn off the power first). allow the unit to dry and restore power. (avoid spraying water on the motor or the electircal panel)
Last But not Least Check your Breakers!!
There are a lot of times when an air conditioner fails to function due to overheating of the electrical breaker and this causes it to trip off. You will need to locate the breaker panel and look at all the breakers mainly the ones with two switches and one handle they may only move a fraction when they trip so we suggest turning off all the breakers making sure you turn them all the way off and then slowly turn them all the way back on. Many Many times this will save you a service call, recheck the system.
if the system has not restarted or the problem does not sound like any of those listed give us a call or contact a qualified service agency near you to repair your system.
Warning do not remove panels or check other items inside the ac units unless you have been trained to do so. Serious injury or death could result.
